Maarten Van Ingelgem (b. 1976, Belgium) studied at the conservatories of Brussels (piano, with Jan Michiels) and Antwerp (composition, with Wim Henderickx). In addition to his work as piano instructor and accompanist, he runs the composition class at the Academy of Dilbeek (near Brussels). He conducts the mixed chamber choir for contemporary music De 2de Adem and is one of the bass singers of Aquarius, also dedicated to contemporary vocal music.
As a composer, he has already created over sixty compositions, ranging from solo work to string quartets, from a chamber opera to a piano concerto. In 2005, he was awarded the Contemporary Music Prize of the Province of East Flanders for his piano concerto. In 2008, Sabam (the Belgian Author Society) honored him with the Golden Poppy for his choral oeuvre. In both 2012 and 214, he received the European Award for Choral Composers for his compositions 24 12 1914, and Fairy Ring respectively.
For the 14th edition of IKV, Maarten van Ingelgem accepted the assignment to compose the compulsory works for mixed, female and male-voice choirs. Maarten decided to use texts by Helen White.
At ‘Euprint Editions’ in Heverlee the works were published entitled ‘White Songs’ :
‘Visual poetry’ is about hermits, exaltated words and floods.
‘Anchorite’ is written for mixed choirs (divisi up to SSAATTBB), a visual version can be watched on wikipedia.
