Maarten Van Ingelgem – Composer of the Compulsory works

Maarten Van Ingelgem – Composer of the Compulsory works – http://www.maartenvaningelgem.be

Maarten Van Ingelgem (b. 1976, Belgium) studied at the conservatories of Brussels (piano, with Jan Michiels) and Antwerp (composition, with Wim Henderickx).  In addition to his work as piano instructor and accompanist, he runs the composition class at the Academy of Dilbeek (near Brussels). He conducts the mixed chamber choir for contemporary music De 2de Adem and is one of the bass singers of Aquarius, also dedicated to contemporary vocal music.
As a composer, he has already created over sixty compositions, ranging from solo work to string quartets, from a chamber opera to a piano concerto. In 2005, he was awarded the Contemporary Music Prize of the Province of East Flanders for his piano concerto. In 2008, Sabam (the Belgian Author Society) honored him with the Golden Poppy for his choral oeuvre. In both 2012 and 214, he received the European Award for Choral Composers for his compositions 24 12 1914, and Fairy Ring respectively.

For the 14th edition of IKV, Maarten van Ingelgem  accepted the assignment to compose the compulsory works for mixed, female and male-voice choirs. Maarten decided to use texts by Helen White.
At ‘Euprint Editions’ in Heverlee the works were published entitled  ‘White Songs’ :
‘Visual poetry’ is about hermits, exaltated words and floods.
Anchorite’  is written for mixed choirs (divisi up to SSAATTBB), a visual version can be watched on wikipedia.
In ‘Upstream‘  for female choirs, the floods of 2007 in the UK are brought back in words and sounds : pictures of the flood near the place where the poet’s mother lives can be found on wikipedia: ‘2007 United Kingdom floods’
In ‘Mouth full of birds’ for male choirs, the hilarious text has likewise been put to music.

Selected choirs 2017

For the 14th edition of the International Choir Contest of Flanders-Maasmechelen the participating choirs have been selected.

IKV celebrates its 30th anniversary which makes this 14th edition an anniversary edition.
The competition includes two categories: one for mixed voices and one for equal women’s and men’s voices.

Thirteen choirs have been retained from the submitted applications: 8 mixed choirs, four female choirs and one male choir.

The origin of the choirs is very diverse. With a certain pride and satisfaction we welcome three choirs from our own country: Camerata Aetas Nova from Leuven, Amaranthe from Oudenaarde and Carmina Viva in Sankt-Vith (eastern provinces). We wish them a nice stay in Maasmechelen and a very nice result.

From the Netherlands we receive Canta Volare from Beek (Dutch Limburg) and Dualis from Groningen.

The Oberwalliser Vokalensemble comes from Sion (Switzerland).

The Eastern European Countries are very well represented by:
Vox Novus from Ceske Budejovice (Czech Republic), Cappella Odak Zagreb (Croatia), Cantemus from Kamnik (Slovenia), Medicus from Rezekne (Latvia) and Festino from Saint Petersburg (Russia).

Finally, the furthest participant is the university choir Paramabira from Jakarta (Indonesia). They will sing with a mixed choir and a male choir.

SELECTED CHOIRS 2017

The quality of the choirs is very high and they have gathered impressive results at renowned choral competitions. This guarantees a musical feast with a thrilling competition.
The singing contest begins on Saturday, October 7th, 2017 and ends with a grand finale concert in which all the choirs participate at 20:00 on Sunday, October 8th, 2017.
The full program of our Flemish choral contest can be found on this site!
