The international Choir contest of Flanders – Maasmechelen, that together with Arezzo, Cork,
Debrecen, Marktoberdorf, Tours and Maribor is part of a select group of leading European
choir contests exists for 30 years this 2017. This is celebrated with a festive concert at the
Culture Centre of Maasmechelen. Apart from the Gentlemen Singers also the mixed choir
Cantate Maasmechelen will perform. This choir founded the international Choir contest of
Flanders – Maasmechelen and still is its main organizer.
After the ‘ouverture’ by Cantate, conducted by Marie-Rose Van Gerven, the stage is cleared
for the Gentlemen Singers.
Mixed choir Cantate Maasmechelen
Cantate was founded in 1967 by Frans Meyers and Maurice Delporte. The first conductor
was Marcel Colla. In 1977 Maurice Delporte took over until 1989. Then Marie-Rose Van
Gerven became conductor and she still is.
On the occasion of its 20 the anniversary in 1987, the choir organized – under the impulse of
Frans Meyers – the first International Choir Contest called ‘Cantate’. The history of Cantate
and the competition are inextricabley linked.
Obviously, both organisations want to celebrate these jubilees together.
